I am excited to share some of my recent submissions to the Writing Battle short story competitions over the past year.

I stumbled across Writing Battle by accident as I was Google searching opportunities for writers and was quickly intrigued by the format of the "battles", the relaxed atmosphere and fun gamification of writing. "Battles" range in length from 250-2000 words depending on the competition, with varied writing deadlines of up to a week, or sometimes as little as 48 hours! Each entrant draws three prompt cards which tell you the genre, character archetype and object that you must incorporate in your story, with the option of doing limited redraws if the choices really stump you. I have found that this has been an effective way to pull myself out of a creative rut and shake up any writer's block or imposter syndrome woes. Some of my favourite short stories that I have written have come from Writing Battle, and writing outside of my genre. The Writing Battle platform has been a very helpful tool that encourages creativity and pushes me out of my comfort zone as a writer. Beyond that, it is a supportive community of fellow creatives that make writing FUN!

This post is 100% not sponsored, but I have had such a fun time writing with them since Spring of 2024 that I thought I would share! I am currently anxiously awaiting the results of the FEAR 2025 competition where my offering was a little more in my comfort zone -- modern dystopian fiction. Until then, enjoy some of my past entries:

With Warmth and Wonder,

Amberley Gardhouse
